BackupPC is a high-performance, enterprise-grade system for backing up Linux and WinXX PCs and laptops to a server’s disk. BackupPC is highly configurable and easy to install and maintain.
Given the ever decreasing cost of disks and raid systems, it is now practical and cost effective to backup a large number of machines onto a server’s local disk or network storage. This is what BackupPC does. For some sites, this might be the complete backup solution. For other sites, additional permanent archives could be created by periodically backing up the server to tape. A variety of Open Source systems are available for doing backup to tape.
BackupPC is written in Perl and extracts backup data via SMB using Samba, tar over ssh/rsh/nfs, or rsync. It is robust, reliable, well documented and freely available as Open Source on SourceForge.

Buying OEM versions of Windows Vista: the facts
What is OEM?
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, and most often refers to the likes of Dell or Gateway. At least originally, “OEM versions” of products were usually the same products that you’d find at retail, but with no-frills packaging, reduced support, and sometimes lesser warranties.
When it comes to Windows, “OEM editions” most often refer to the cheaper versions of Windows made available to “system builders” and other classes of Microsoft partners. You can buy OEM versions of Windows online almost any place that sells software, such as NewEgg. Companies keep compliant with Microsoft’s rules by bundling OEM versions with a token piece of hardware, like a cable. Here’s a glimpse of current OEM pricing:
* Vista Home Basic $99 (full version retail: $199)
* Vista Home Premium: $119 (full version retail: $239)
* Vista Business: $149 (full version retail: $299)
* Vista Ultimate $199 (full version retail: $399)
Windows Vista launch event
Bill gates is walking on stage. “Well, it all started 24 years ago in NYC, Microsoft committed to GUI. Machines could barely keep up, took us two more years to get it all together. That was our bet, that not only could we do fantastic things with Windows, but that it would be the platform for our partners. Two years later, we could say with Windows 95 that our vision had succeeded — 32 bit computing drove GUI into mainstream.
Install your Own HDD on Xbox360!
TheSpecialist (one of the hackers who worked a lot on the original Xbox (360) DVD Firmware hack) sent us an awesome new tool that will allow you to use your own new SATA HDD in your Xbox360! No more 100usd for 20GB ![]()
The current tool only works with Western Digital BEVS series HDDs (20GB or larger needed) and for now you can use max 20GB, but when Microsoft will release larger drives you will be able to use as much space as Microsoft’s largest HDD.
Here’s the full readme with all the details:
[QUOTE]
Hddhacker v0.5B by the Specialist.
*************************** DISCLAIMER ********************************
This tool has only been tested by me. It worked for me. While great care has been taken, this tool may contain bugs and therefore may seriously harm your HDD. Use at own risk !!!
*************************** DISCLAIMER ********************************
What: This tool will allow you to use HDD’s that are not ‘certified’ by Microsoft.
This specific tool is written for use with the Western Digital BEVS series
only!
How it works:
x360 HDD’s contain information on sector 16 about the HDD: the HDD serial number, the model, the firmware version and the size in sectors is stored here. The x360 asks the HDD to identify itself, by sending an ‘IDENTIFY DEVICE’ ATA to the HDD. It will compare the returned information to the info that is stored on sector 16. This information on sector 16 is signed and thus can not be changed. This tool will mod the FW from the WD HDD to comply with the information on sector 16, so that the ‘identify’ information will match the information on sector 16 and your x360 will accept the HDD as valid.
How to use:
Get yourself a Western Digital SATA BEVS HDD. Copy sectors 16 - 22 (7 sectors) from a valid x360 HDD to the Western Digital. Then, boot to dos (not a dos box from windows) and run this application. Make sure that you have ONLY this Western Digital drive connected to your sata controller, have the other devices disconnected. Then follow the instructions on screen. Keep in mind that you have to start the utility from a writable path if you want to create an ‘undo’ file (it will save it to the path you’ve started the tool from). Make sure that you have FIRST copied the sectors 16-22 onto the drive, BEFORE using this tool ! The tool will need that info on sector 16, otherwise it doesn’t know how to mod your FW.
After the tool has flashed your drive, turn off your computer, wait a few seconds, restart your computer and re-run the tool. The tool will tell you then whether the whole thing was succesful.
FAQ:
Q. Will this tool allow me to connect a 500 gb drive to my x360 ?
A. No. The information on sector 16 is signed and can’t be changed. You can only use size where you have a valid signature for. In otherwords, if a bigger HDD comes out, you can use that signature.
Q. With which HDD’s does this work with ?
A. It should work with *ALL* Western Digital HDD’s from the Scorpio BEVS series.
Q. Do I need the same size WD HDD as the size on sector 16 states ?
A. No. You can use bigger HDD’s, but you can’t use more than the size stated in sector 16. You can NOT use smaller HDD’s than the size on sector 16 states. For example, you can use a 40 GB HDD with a sector 16 from a 20 GB HDD, but not the other way around of course.
Q. Can I use the HDD in my PC again ?
A. Of course. The tool comes with an ‘undo’ option, that will restore the original size. For example, you use a 40 gb WD HDD, you copied 16 sector from a valid xbox 20 gb HDD, so the tool will transform your 40 GB HDD into a 20 gb HDD. However, you can restore it to 40 gb anytime you want. The tool has the ability to create an ‘undo’ file, BUT this current version doesn’t contain the option to flash it back. The next version will be able to do that. Just create the undo file and wait for a new version, should be out in the near future.
Q. Why do I need more sectors than sector 16, if that one stores all the info?
A. The following sectors contain the MS copyright logo and is checked for by the x360. Without it, the x360 will reject the HDD.
Q. I have a x360 core version and want to use this hack to buy a cheap HDD. But how do i connect it?
A. MS uses a specific connector. While it doesn’t look too complicated to create your own, I haven’t tried this myself, but I’m sure there are some creative hardware minded souls out there that should be able to think of something
Q. How do I copy the 7 sectors?
A. You can do so with tools like hex workshop, winhex etc. If you don’t understand these tools, ask somebody who does.
Q. The tool doesn’t detect my HDD !
A. First, make sure you are running it from dos, not from a dos box under windows. Then, try playing with the SATA/RAID settings in your bios. Not all SATA controllers are supported. I use a VIA controller, which works perfectly. However my tool fails to
see my Promise controller. I’ll see if I can support more different controllers in the next version.
Q. Your tool says everything was succesful but the drive doesn’t work in my 360 !
A. Make sure you have copied sectors 16-22 correctly and didn’t change any data.
Q. Could you do this for my Seagate, Maxtor, Samsung or whatever drive too?
A. Yes, but I don’t have plans to do so. The cheapest WD drive (40 gb) ships for about $50 and thus is one of the cheapest. It is a lot of work to convert this tool for usage with other brands and I don’t think it is worth the trouble.
Q. So how do I get my 80 GB WD HDD working as 80 GB in my x360 ?
A. There are 2 options: wait for a release by MS, so you can use that sector 16 (or hope that the rumours that they ARE out there already are true) OR wait for the kernel to be hacked. These are the only 2 options.
Q. Where can I donate ?
A. Nowhere. Just enjoy
Thanks to: Team MODFREAKz for his initial logic board experiments, Loser for his findings on the sector 16 and everybody else at XBH.
v3.03 PSP Downgrader released!
After much work over the past few days, we finally succeeded - we have an easy-to-use downgrader for v3.03 PSPs!
Some ground-rules:
* This downgrader is for v3.03 firmware only. But if you have v2.81 - v3.02, no problem - you can just upgrade to v3.03 to use the downgrader.
* You need a copy of the unpatched GTA:Liberty City Stories UMD. No ISOs, no patched UMDs, not Vice City Stories. See here for some info on how to check if your version is patched. The most reliable way : the unpatched disks have the v2.0 firmware update on them.
* This downgrader is intended to enable homebrew. Homebrew is NOT the same as piracy. Don’t be a thieving loser - buy the games you play.
* The downgrader will work on all current PSP hardware (TA-079 - TA-086). Patching of TA-082 is automatic in the downgrader.
* You downgrade at your own risk. There is always a chance of bricking, although we have done everything we can think of to make this process safe.Full instructions for downgrading are included in the Downgrader_HOWTO.txt file in the ZIP file. Read them carefully! You will need:
* The 3.03 downgrader package
* Official v1.50 Firmware Update EBOOT
* Official v3.03 Firmware Update EBOOT (only if your PSP is not 3.03 already)Enjoy! You can get support for any problems at the PSPUpdates forum.
Remember to check out the PSP Homebrew Database for information on homebrew that can be run on your newly-downgraded PSP!
Warning: After downgrading from 3.03 to 1.5, there are some remnants of 3.03 left in flash. If you later try to re-upgrade to 3.03 and repeat the downgrade, things will break. At some later point, we will work on a cleaner that will remove these extra files. Until then, enjoy! (Don’t worry, upgrading to 3.03 OE firmwares still works fine).
PS3 ISO loader on the way?
If you’re a card-carrying black-hat hacker, then a couple of significant news items have hit the crackerverse this week. First, the last reminaing PS3 game to be dumped, Tiger Woods 07, has hit the newsgroups for your downloading pleasure. Now, what to do with all of that binary goodness? An answer may be on the way. In the .NFO file for Tiger Woods, an interesting hint of things to come was made:

| Stop nagging about loaders - it will come if and when its ready |
| Now sod off and let us beta test it ! |
GoDaddy SUCKS.
MySpace demanded that GoDaddy pull the plug on Seclists.org, which hosts some 250,000 pages of mailing list archives and other resources, because a list of thousands of MySpace usernames and passwords was archived on the site. GoDaddy claims its customers own about 18 million domains.
GoDaddy complied. In a move that Seclists.org owner Fyodor Vaskovich said happened with no prior notice, the company deleted his domain name–causing his site to be effectively unreachable for about seven hours on Wednesday until he found out what was happening and removed the password list.
“They didn’t tell me why they removed the site,” Vaskovich, creator of the popular Nmap security auditing utility, said in a phone interview. “At a very minimum, we should get warning.”
Vaskovich said he spent “hours and hours” on the phone with GoDaddy on Wednesday before he finally got through to someone who was willing to listen. As a result of this experience, he said in an e-mail announcement, “I’m in the market for a new registrar. One who doesn’t immediately bend over for any large corporation who asks.”
Dark_AleX’s 3.03 OE-C Released!
- AVC videos bitrate limit patched. The firmware limited the bitrate of avc videos to only 768 Kbps. OE now forces the limit to be 16384 Kbps. (Note: this doesn’t mean than the psp can handle such a high bitrate, this means than they won’t show error. I don’t know which is the real maximum bitrate than the psp can handle at full speed)
- Speed of OE boot is now ~3 seconds faster than previous versions. (without plugins)
- CPU speed of XMB can now be changed.
- Wifi can now work at 333 Mhz!
- Added access to flash 0 and 1 via usb in the recovery menu, based on the great idea of USBSSS by Booster. Note that writing is enabled, so this is intended only for advanced users that know what they are doing in each moment.(It is not a great idea to change anything from the kd folder). Because of this addition, the rest of flashing options were removed.
- PSP isos can now be deleted as any normal memstick games. (also the size of the iso now shows fine when you press triangle->information).
- When formatting memory stick, GAME150, GAME303 and ISO directories will be automatically created!
- Changes in internal HEN core:
- If a EBOOT.PBP with a plain DATA.PSP had a data.psar, modulemgr took as size of the executable the size of data.psp+data.psar. Fixed. (this fix enables psx games to have plain data.psp without causing a memory error).
- Added a couple of patches found by Tyranid. One allows syscalls instructions to be used in kernel mode without causing a crash. The other allows sceKernelQueryModuleInfo to work with sceInit and previous modules.
And this is just the stuff in the actual firmware. Dark_AleX has also updated the popstation with the following things:
- The writing is now a bit different. This will avoid “Memory stick blinking too much” bug when using the plugin to load the 3.02 pops.
- popstation now lets the use of non-encrypted DATA.PSP. If data.psp is in the same directory as the app, popstation will use that as the DATA.PSP of the eboot.pbp. Otherwise, it will use the one from BASE.PBP. A DATA.PSP that imitates the original sony one is included.
- EBOOT.PBP generated with a non encrypted data.psp won’t need the file KEYS.BIN at all. (Note: these EBOOT.PBP cannot work in versions prior to 3.03 OE-C due to a bug that those versions had.)
Since this is a major update, you have to do the full update by generating a DATA.DXAR using the OEUPDMAKER and then using that DXAR and flashing it using the 303oeflasher in the archive. Please refer to the readme for the full instructions. As always, please be careful with this mod. Since it modifies your PSP’s flash0, there is a minor chance of bricking. Neither Dark_AleX, nor QJ.NET can be held responsible if something happens to your PSP as a result of flashing this firmware. With that said, here’s the download.
BackupBluray rip utility released
A new utility has just been released in a very early Alpha stage, aptly dubbed “BackupBluray”. This BackupBluray tool is designed to help backup Blu-ray (BD-ROM) movies. The early version of this utility only supports the decryption of Blu-ray discs whose CPS unit key is known. Support for decryption via a Volume Unique key will most likely be added in the near future as development continues. At this point, a stable version of the tool is not yet available for mass distribution. The initial tool has already proven successful though, as there has already been one confirmed report of a successful Blu-ray Disc backup. If the BackupHDDVD tool history is any indication as to where BackupBluray will end up, we can expect to see the source code released to the public along with a SourceForge.net project opened.
